    Review

“One the year’s best biographies.”  —Washington Post "Mr. Brady's biography is well-written, studiously researched and filled with fascinating details.  It imparts the love of chess and affection for 'Bobby' that the author clearly feels...Boris Spassky, after the losing the world championship title to Fischer, said: 'I think I understand him.'  Perhaps one day the rest of us will too.  Until then, we have Endgame to fill the void." —Wall Street Journal“The freakishly talented, freakishly flawed Fischer played the game as if it were a blood sport…In ENDGAME Frank Brady tells the story of Fischer’s life with a dramatic flair and a sense of judiciousness.”—The Boston Globe "Brady's book is an impressive balancing act and a great accomplishment...What results is a chance for the reader to weigh up the evidence and come to his own conclusions -- or skip judgments completely and simply enjoy reading a rise-and-fall story that has more than a few affinities with Greek tragedy." —The New York Review of Books“Presents Fischer’s story with an almost Olympian evenhandedness that ends up making it far more absorbing than any sensationalized account.”—Laura Miller, Salon.com  "Brady is in a unique position to write about Fischer...he had access to new materials, including files from the FBI and the K.G.B. (which identified Fischer as a threat to Soviet chess hegemony in the mid-1980s); the personal archives of Fischer's mother, Regina, and his mentor and coach Jack Collins; and even an autobiographical essay written by the teenage Fischer.  The wealth of material allows Brady to describe many rich moments and details."—New York Times Book Review"Brady seems unusually well qualified to capture Fischer’s many facets and contradictions…ENDGAME is a rapt, intimate book, greatly helped by Brady’s acquaintance with Fischer…he sees the person behind the bluster…he also makes use of unusually good source material…fascinating."—New York Times“Even if you don’t give a damn about chess, or Bobby Fischer, you’ll find yourself engrossed …has the arc of a Greek tragedy --with a grim touch of mad King Lear at the end…ENDGAME is one of those books that makes you want your dinner guests to go the hell home so you can get back to it.”—Dick Cavett"Recommended not just for chess enthusiasts but for anyone interested in the compelling compelling life of a complex, enigmatic, American icon." —Library Journal "Brady masters Endgame." —Vanity Fair"Insightful…Brady is uniquely qualified to write this…The book should appeal to a broad audience, from hard-core chess fans to casual players to those who are simply interested in what is a compelling personal story."—Booklist“Engrossing…The Mozart of the chessboard is inseparable from the monster of paranoid egotism in this fascinating biography…Brady gives us a tragic narrative of a life that became a chess game.”—Publishers Weekly (Pick of the Week/Starred Review) “The teenage prodigy, the eccentric champion, the irascible anti-Semite, the genius, the pathetic paranoid—these and other Bobby Fischers strut and fret their hour upon celebrity’s stage….Informed, thorough, sympathetic and surpassingly sad.”—Kirkus Reviews "ENDGAME is rich in detail and insight. It is sympathetic and human, but not at all naive. I admire Brady's resolve, and I consider this book essential reading in the effort to understand Bobby Fischer and his place in our world."—David Shenk, author of THE GENIUS IN ALL OF US and THE IMMORTAL GAME "The definitive portrait of the greatest—and most disturbed—chess genius of all time.”—Paul Hoffman, author of THE MAN WHO LOVED ONLY NUMBERS and KING’S GAMBIT “Bobby Fischer began life as a lonely prodigy and ended it as a hate-spewing enigma, and in between became America's greatest chess player, a man renowned both for his unmatched brilliance and social clumsiness. In ENDGAME, Frank Brady masterfully chronicles the full breadth of Fischer's life, producing a narrative driven by staggering detail and profound insight into the psyche of a troubled genius.”—Wayne Coffey, New York Times bestselling author of THE BOYS OF WINTER “You don’t have to know the game of chess to be mesmerized by the dizzying and ultimately dark journey of the world’s most heralded player.  Frank Brady has researched and detailed Bobby Fischer’s every move—on and off the chessboard—for an incisive and objective account of a man whose genius was matched by his eccentricities.  This is a riveting look at a tarnished American icon.”—Pat H. Broeske, New York Times bestselling co-author of HOWARD HUGHES: THE UNTOLD STORY "I've wondered about the weird and fascinating life of Bobby Fischer since I was a teen-aged New York Times copyboy sent out to the lobby to keep Fischer’s mother from pestering editors and reporters. Finally, after 50 years, I've finally gotten the weird and fascinating biography I've been waiting for. Bravo, Brady."—Robert Lipsyte, author of AN ACCIDENTAL SPORTSWRITER   “A definitive and finely detailed chronicle of one of the most fascinating and eccentric Americans of the 20th century, written by one of the few men with the expertise, knowledge and writing ability to pull it off in a manner deserving of the subject.”—Michael Weinreb, author of THE KINGS OF NEW YORK “Fischer is America’s greatest antihero. This fascinating biography is filled with hope, Cold War intrigue, the fulfillment of genius, and an explosive fall from grace that is both deeply moving and, ultimately, profoundly sad.”—Jeremy Silman, author of THE AMATEUR’S MIND "I have been following Bobby Fischer my whole life, but I learned something new on nearly every page of this wonderful book. Frank Brady is the perfect biographer for Bobby Fischer, and ENDGAME tells the full and fair story of Fischer's astonishing rise and heartbreaking fall."—Christopher Chabris, author of THE INVISIBLE GORILLA

Review:No other chess match or game has captured the world's attention more than the 1972 World Championship match between challenger Bobby Fischer of the United States and champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union. After winning this match, Fischer became a huge celebrity and this extra attention also showed the world the other side of the man. His life both before and after this event is covered in this biography written by Frank Brady. It illustrates a young man who was raised along with his sister by a single mother who was chasing dreams of her own. He would spend a lot of his free time at chess clubs or in the library learning as much of the game as he could and using a small chess set to simulate the games. Fischer's ability to memorize and analyze thousands of games and game situations is well documented and helped him on the way to the championship. What is also well documented and described is Fischer's personality, which shows some bizarre characteristics as well. He would often make outrageous demands for business deals or for conditions before he would participate in matches. Most of the time, these demands were eventually met, but it showed his lack of negotiating skills, taking the "my way or the highway" approach. It is also well-known that Fischer would engage in behavior or outbursts that were paranoid, anti-Semitic, or otherwise far from ordinary. These eventually caught up to Fischer and led him to isolationism, eventually landing him in Iceland where he settled after a nomadic life that had to end because he wore out his welcome in most nations. It is also important to note that he was facing tax evasion charges in the United States. His family was also regularly investigated by the FBI because of their connections with Russia - his mother for her studies and Fischer for his interest because chess was highly regarded there. All of these are combined together to make a very intriguing and entertaining biography of a brilliant but troubled man. There is chess talk in the book as well, but not too far in depth. Therefore, a non-chess buff will enjoy this book as well as an enthusiastic player or fan.Did I skim?NoDid I learn something new?Yes. Most of what I learned that was new was about his relationships with his mother and sister, as those were reported in the media as strained. While unusual, the book portrayed these relationships as loving, not estranged as was often reported. The regret that Fischer shows when he cannot attend his mother's funeral or face arrest in the United States is a good example of this.Pace of the book:Very good. It doesn't drag too slowly and the sections on Fischer's important chess matches make you feel you are there in the chair next to him.Positives:Outstanding research is evident in this book as many minute details of Fischer's famous rants and demands from tournament officials are shared. The author was able to glean many minute and obscure details that made this very rich and vivid for the reader.Negatives:I would have liked to see more in-depth writing about the actual chess games in some of the matches. An example is during the second match with Spassky, many games toward the end ended in a draw as Fischer wrapped up the match early. Yes, these games may not have been key in deciding the outcome, but more than a simple sentence saying they ended in a draw would have been better.Do I recommend?Yes. Even if the reader is not interested in chess, Fischer's biography is a very interesting tale and any reader who likes good biographies will enjoy this book.

Absolutely, positively, the best book on the life of Bobby Fischer I've ever read! Nothing else comes close! The details Mr. Brady goes into about Bobby Fischer's life, both personal and his chess career, left me very satisfied and content that there is nothing more to learn about Bobby Fischer. This book is so well written that when I put it down, I couldn't wait to pick it up again. An easy read; there are no actual games in this book so you don't have to know how to play chess to enjoy learning about one of the best chess players of all time!I started playing chess in 1972, before I ever heard of Bobby Fischer. When I did learn of him I went out and purchased my first chess book, Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess. Despite the current criticism of this book it was helpful to me at the time and made me want to learn more. Then came the 1972 World Chess Championship against Boris Spassky. The excitement of his win, not showing up to defend his title, his disappearance, derogatory remarks, problems with the U.S. government, his rematch against Spassky in 1992, and finally his death - I knew these things but I didn't know the stories surrounding them and was never satisfied with any of the other books I've read until I came across this one. Thank you Mr. Brady for a wonderful, well written story of Bobby Fischer's life! It answered a lot of questions and I learned many thing's I didn't know. I can't explain why I didn't come across your book earlier but I'm glad I did. Very highly recommended if you want to know more about Bobby Fischer!

I just finished the book. It was interesting to read from start to finish. It describes Bobby Fischer from childhood to the end of his life and provides a deep look into his personality and character. The author describes Fischer's good traits as well as the bad.Aside from psychosocial and biographical information about Bobby Fischer, the books also goes over a number of details of the world at the time of any given time period in Bobby's life.I really cannot think anything to criticize about this book. Some have complained that Brady doesn't list or discuss the actual chess games themselves move by move. I think it is a good decision to avoid that and focus on Fischer's biography only.Chances are that you're looking at this book because you've heard about or watched the recent film about Fischer, "Pawn Sacrifice". This is a much better source of information about Fischer and a much better and more accurate look into his life.

This book is excellent and the only one you will ever need to read on Bobby Fischer. It is a clear portrayal of him as both a prodigy, a genius, and a complete and unequivocal jerk. When the author reported certain of his behaviors I was sometimes too embarrassed to continue. For example, when Princess Grace of Monaco gave Bobby an envelope containing cash that was owed to him for a chess event, he he ripped it open and counted the money before agreeing to shake her hand. This is only one example out of many detailed in this book. The book thoughtfully portrays his chess games and his disturbed personality.

If you've ever wanted to separate fact from fiction when it comes to the life of Bobby Fischer this book will do it for you, and in the process providing an intimate insight and behind the scenes look into America's Chess Champion. Fascinating reading, good insight into human nature, and the revelation that Fischer might not have been quite the child prodigy we assume. His brilliance seems to have come in spurts and spells, and he suffered many defeats both as a child and as an adult. And then there's the lengthy and revealing look at his descent from Chess stardom into the years of his decline and rabid antisemitic viewpoint. A thoroughly engaging read from one of the people who knew him best.
